Coso Hot Springs

USA / California / Pearsonville /
hot spring, NRHP - National Register of Historic Places

The hot springs operated as a resort and health spa from the mid-1880s into the early decades of the twentieth century. Although grand plans for a sanitarium and other facilities were never realized, the resort ultimately included a complex of 12 guest cabins, cabins for staff members, a hotel, outbuildings of various kinds, and a restaurant.

The springs as they appeared in 1938:

  • Family photo added, year unknown. Incorrectly labeled hotel, this is the restaurant, hotel is just visible to the right. All the wood cabins to the left are piles of kindling. Only a couple wood buildings survive today, they are behind the restaurant and not visible here.
  • Have present day photos, but not cleared to share... :( The stone walls of the restaurant and hotel are in very good shape. Roof of the restaurant is in tatters. Interior walls appear to be adobe, and so are eroding from rain. Much of the interior wood work survivies, but not in good shape. The hotel has a very large open area in the center, with rooms along opposite walls. The roof over the center section has collapsed and is on the floor, exposing the individual rooms to the elements. Roofs over the rooms looked to be in pretty good shape as of late 2013. There are other structure ruins to the northeast along the road, but I didn't visit those. The geothermal project at Devil's Kitchen has altered the hot springs significantly. It should be noted that this is well within the China Lake NAWS, and is strictly off limits. I obtained access due to my grandfather's history in the area and having been hired by the Navy as caretaker at nearby Junction Ranch. He actually worked here a time in the early 30's doing maintenance.
