Golaghat is the headquarters of Golaghat District, in the Indian state of Assam.
Golaghat is located at 26°31′N 93°58′E / 26.52°N 93.97°E / 26.52; 93.97.[1] It has an average elevation of 95 metres (311 feet).

'Golaghat' the name comes from a few 'Golas' (i.e., stores or shops of Marowari community on the bank of river Dhansiri) +suffix -ghat, means a foot way to river or a landing place to the river cf. Dhikhowghat, Dichangghat, Namdangghat etc.
In early times, this region was known as Marangi <Morangkii a place known for mineral deals also Namdoiyang. This was under the Kacharis, the Nagas, the Tai-Ahom and for a while under Mughal Nabab Mirjumla in A.D. 1662-63. Mughals named this area as 'Mughaltop.' The famous early Khanikar-Nagarjhari Inscription recovered here. The medieval Kachari rulers were: Derchungpha, Detchung etc. During Tai-Ahom rule Marangikhowa Gohain along with Doiyangia Rajkhowa and Barchetia commanded this region as Border Minister.
Golaghat region was a part of early Dimalang, Saumarpith, Kachamari-Dubarani State etc.
The name stands today for the Golaghat subdivision as well as the District.
