Friends Bridge (London)

United Kingdom / England / Westham / London

Alias 'Red Bridge', installed in October 1998 as a 'a dramatic 67-tonne winged bridge designed to resemble an autumn leaf' and forming part of the National Cycle Network.

Design features included the 'wings' which both obscured the view along the river and provided a perennially popular graffiti zone, and a wood surface dangerously slippery in wet or frosty conditions.

This section of the River Lea is the site of spectacular bream spawning activity in May, threatened by the construction of the Prescott Locks rendering the river non-tidal.
