Mount Hutt is the largest ski area in Canterbury. From the on-piste with a mixture of man made and natural snow to the many off-piste areas with wide open bowls, steeps and shutes. There is plenty of terrain for every level of skier.
There is a large beginners area in front of the base buildings, wide groomed runs running the length of the field for intermediates and experts, and the off-piste. The Towers and South Face offer plenty of varied terrain for the more advanced skier.
Conditions permitting there is also back country skiing down North Peak with a helicopter pick up which drops skiers back at the car park.
Follow the signposts from Methven, the turnoff is about ten kilometres. It is sealed highway until the turn off just before the mountain road barrier. Then there is an unsealed road which winds through alpine terrain for about fifteen kilometres. This road is not overly steep but can be deceptive on the downward journey. It also travels along ridge tops in certain areas which are exposed to wind gusts.
