cathedral, Roman Catholic church
St Canice's Cathedral was built between 1202 and 1285 on the site of a 6th-century monastery said to have been founded by St Canice himself. The cathedral replaced a succession of earlier churches, one of which presumably gave the surrounding town its name (Kilkenny = "Cill Chainnigh" = church of Canice).
