St Patrick's, the largest of Dublin's two cathedrals, stands on one of, if not
not the oldest Christian site in Dublin, it being here that St Patrick baptised his
converts at a well in what is now the park adjacent to the cathedral. The present church, modelled on the cathedral at Salisbury, was founded in 1190 and, was extensively rebuilt towards the end of the 14th century. A further restoration at the expense of Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness took place in 1864. It is of interest to note that the base of the medieval south door is almost two meters below present pavement level.
