Great Lakes Maritime Academy was established in 1969 to train men and women to be licensed US Merchant Marine Officers on ships in Great Lakes, Coastwise and International markets.

One of only six state maritime academies in the United States, Great Lakes Maritime Academy is partnered with Ferris State University and offers its cadets a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration in addition to their requisite maritime credentials at the completion of their coursework.
