Originally designed in 1914 by famed architect Daniel Burnham as headquarters for City National Bank & Trust which was established by Charles G Dawes who later became Vice President under Calvin Coolidge and was a recipient of the 1925 Nobel Peace Prize. In 1961, the bank merged with Continental Illinois Trust which was located diagonally across LaSalle Street.

In 2007-2009, the lower 12 floors were converted to a 620-room JW Marriott Hotel. In 2022, the top five office floors were converted to another separate hotel, The La Salle Hotel. The 4 floors between the two hotels remain offices.
