The Gearagh has gained international importance due to its alluvial woodland, the only area of such habitat in Ireland and Britain. It is protected by National Parks & Wildlife Service as a Special Protection Area (SPA), a Special Area of Conservation (SAC), and a Nature Reserve, as well as Ramsar and Biogenetic Reserve. The woodland is inaccessible.
