Backbone Mountain is a ridge stretching far into Maryland and West Virginia. Near the WV border, the ridge rises to the highest elevation in the state of Maryland, at 3360'. The ridge is privately owned at this location, so use only established hiking routes.

Highest point in Maryland: Backbone Mountain, Garrett County, 3360 feet above sea level. Named for Captain Charles E. Hoye, founder of the Garrett County Historical Society. Dedicated September 1, 1952.
