On August 26, 1814 this house provided shelter for President Madison and his official party during the British burning of the federal buildings in Washington, D.C. in the War of 1812. The following day, August 27th, the Secretary of State James Monroe joined the President here and they returned to the Capitol.

Was also a station on the Underground Railroad.

There is a similar marker, making a similar claim, at the Caleb Bentley House, about 600 feet to the south on High Street. Both houses, along with several other buildings of similar vintage, are within the Brookeville Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
