Shatakh (Turkish: Çatak, Armenian: Շատախ) is a district Capital in Van province of today's Turkey. For a long historical period since the ancient era up to the 1920th this was Armenian city named Shatakh. Believed that the name originated from the V cen. AD. governor who was talkative person, whose people named "Shatakhos" (literally: talkative in Armenian) , and the whole district of Bujunik of medieval Armenia's Vaspurakan region after his death get the name of Shatakh (shortening of "shatakhos"). During the Armenian genocide of 1915-1923 the city and neighbouring villages became a center of Armenian self-defence. Fully emptied of native Armenian population in 1923 ater the last Armenians were killed by Turks.
