Cristian (German: Grossau; Hungarian: Kereszténysziget; Latin: Insula Cristiani) is a commune in Sibiu County, Transylvania. It is composed of a single village, Cristian.
The first documentary attestation in 1223, under the Latin name Insula Christana. It is assumed that the village was colonized at the request of the Hungarian king Géza II, during the first wave of colonization, between 1141-1161.
Between 1472 and 1498, the Romanesque basilica was transformed into a Gothic church with three naves.
In 1734, under the rule of Charles VI, Holy Roman Emperor, Protestants who had converted to the Evangelical Lutheran denomination were deported to Transylvania from the lands under the rule of the House of Habsburg. The deportation of more than 800 people, about 200 of them from Carinthia, was disguised under the German name Transmigration. They settled in three villages near Sibiu: Neppendorf (Turnișor, today a district of Sibiu), Großau (Cristian, Sibiu) and Großpold (Apoldu de Sus, Sibiu), and are known as Landler, and their settlement in the same area as the Landlersiedlung.
Between 1735 and 1738, 160 such immigrants settled in Cristian, coming mainly from the Austrian localities of Hallstatt, Ischl, Gosau, Lauben and Goisern.
In 1752-1756 comes a new wave of landler immigrants from Upper Austria.
