Saxis, often called Saxis Island, was once a booming seafood-producing settlement, and fishing and oystering still contribute significantly to the town's economy. The entirety of the town is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) for its architectural and maritime significance. It is designated a historic district.
