Moardăş

Romania / Sibiu / Mihaileni /

Moardăș (in the Saxon dialect Muardesch, Muerdesch, in German Mardisch, in Hungarian Mardos) is a village in the commune of Mihăileni in Sibiu County, Transylvania, Romania.
The first mention is from 1373, regarding the appointment of a priest, Michael of Ardesch.
It seems that the name of the village has Cumanian origins, which was taken over by the Hungarians and passed on to the Saxons as Ardesch, who later became Mardisch.
In the village there is a fortified Lutheran church, built in Gothic style in the 14th century.
Education in the village has a long tradition.
Although the first teacher is mentioned in a document from 1516, the school is older. It is known that Michael Eckhart of Ardisch, who studied at the Saxon school in Moardăș, was enrolled in 1434 at the University of Vienna, at the law school.
