  • I've heard it was a quarry in the early part of the 20th century, but don't have confirmation of that. Just local talk...
  • Anyone know how deep it is? It's always spooked me out since I was a kid.
  • It's covered in a recent book of the history of this neighborhood of Oakland (Rockridge). It is indeed an abandoned quarry. See: http://www.amazon.com/Rockridge-Images-America-Robin-Wolf/dp/0738547999
  • I had wondered myself but found some good info today: It is part of the old Bilger quarry -- http://oaklandgeology.wordpress.com/2008/03/10/rockridge-shopping-center-quarry/ Wikipedia says it is now used as a reservoir for the adjacent Claremont Country Club -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rockridge,_Oakland,_California#History
  • A guy fell into the quarry and died while searching for his dog a few months ago.
