After the bitumen has been separated from the sand, the sandy residue is pumped here. Cyclones along the edge of the pond separate the coarser sand fractions and dump them along the edge of the pond. This forms the bulk of a dam around the border of the pond. The smaller silt and clay fractions are discharged towards the center of the pond where they can settle out leaving water which can be recycled or treated and released.
