Saint Michael's Roman-Catholic Church (Cluj-Napoca)

Romania / Cluj / Cluj-Napoca / Piata Unirii
Gothic (architecture), Roman Catholic church, religious centre

The church was built on a ground that had served as cemetery and where there had been a chapel dedicated to Saint Jacob. The first phase of the construction began in 1350 and ended in 1390, followed by a second phase
between 1410-1487. The altar was built in 1390.

Two towers were designed for the main facade, but only the North-West one was actually built, between 1511-1543. This was brought down in the 17th century after being seriously affected by bad weather and earthquakes. The tower that exists today, with its huge clock, in neo-gothic style, was raised along the North side in 1860.

St. Michael's church is generally named "cathedral", although it only has the ranking of "church" in the roman-catholic order.
