  • In 1830,several Muslim soldiers of the British army stationed here, rose up in rebellion against their colonial masters alleging religious persecution. It was lead by a Jamedar(2nd Lt) in the army. The rebellion was crushed and the leader put to the gallows. His sacrifice was eulogised and compared to that of Imam Hussayn at "Karbala"(in Iraq).Hence the name "Karbala".The graveyards of these rebellious soldiers are located in the burial ground of the Makkani mosque across the Karbala ground.
