Graniteville is an unincorporated town, with a 2010 population of about 2,614 depending on where you think the town's boundaries lie.

Early in the morning of January 6, 2005, a collision between a freight train and a parked freight train resulted in many cars derailing, and a tanker full of chlorine ruptured and released 80 metric tons of chlorine gas. The cloud of gas killed nine people and sickened 250. Authorities evacuated 5,400 people for two weeks during the cleanup. The town's economy was permanently damaged when Avondale Mills, the main employer, went out of business, claiming that the accident was in part to blame.
