Pergins Island (Poole)

United Kingdom / England / Poole

Pergin's Island, but to generations of local people it was always called 'Doughty's Island'-rendered in the dialect as 'Dowdys'.
Edward Doughty, one of the previous owners of Upton House estate, which included the island, had decreed that it could be freely used by the people of Poole and Hamworthy for camping on.

  • apparently, Pergins' Island (the one that you walk round on the path, it's in the middle of the harbour, can't miss it) is haunted. Numerous unexplained fires and 2 day Royal Marine exercises on there that lasted a few hours because of weeeird shit that happened on there.... Its where the people of Poole used to take "witches" back in the 1800's or whenever, tie them to trees and leave them to die on the island. Can't walk anywhere in a 1000m radius of it at night, tooooo creeepy. nab.
  • My last name is Pergins;and I am the only one in the world. So how did this island get it's name?
  • We used to camp there when we were kids. We all had rowing boats and rowed from Sterte Esplanade. The only sopoky things I remember was that the bridge we used to row under to get there (Black Bridge) was supposed to be haunted by a young boy who was alledgedly struck down and killed by a passing train. I also saw a white mist not human shaped but human sized. I often wondered what it was. I also beleive the Island was known as Dowties or Doubty's Island? If I find out any more I will send a message. Regards Lee
  • If anyone has anymore information about this island I'd be fascinated to hear about it!!
  • Some kiddies see ghosts when they are high
  • As a young boy in the 60`s and eirly 70`s My friend and I often took our 4/10s and 22`s over there to camp.this was prior to the Harkwood estate on Hamworthy!only fields then,we rowed our poole canoe from Barkers yard (bottom of hinchcliff road)and stopped over for a saturday evening, not sure about ghosts but one evening we were not alone,on the north side 4 adults made camp about 8.00pm, we watched from a distance, two blonde women and partners danced round a large fire. in the morning they were gone but left, chicken heads nailed to trees and pentagons scraped out on the ground with burnt out candles, and the idiots didnt dows the fire properly!and yes it is known locally a douties not Pergins Island that you see on the maps! used by many local school kids in the summers of the 1970`s girlfriends etc you get the gist of it! its now part of the upton house nature reserve I believe they have a purpose built hide for bird watchers! no ghosts though the dead cant hurt you its the living you got to watch!
  • I actually live right by Holes bay where the island is, only a 5 minute walk from my house, its quite nice to see but really inaccessible and hard to get to. still its actually quite big and is quite pretty to walk by
