park, swamp, nature conservation park / area, interesting place, National Natural Landmark

The park, established November 3rd, 1960 is a designated National Natural Landmark.

It is the remnant of the bottom of Glacial Lake Passaic which was formed by the melting waters of the retreating Wisconsin Glacier at the end of the last Ice Age.

In 1959, the Port of New York Authority unsuccessfully attempted to establish a local regional airport, serving jet aircraft. The idea was abandoned after local residents coordinated legal challenges and purchased large tracts of the park land. The land was then donated to the federal government qualifying it for protection under the U.S. Park system.
