The Marriott Center is named after its primary benefactor, J. Willard Marriott, founder of the Marriott Corporation hotels, restaurant chains, and food services. Ten stories from the floor to the roof, the Marriott Center was finished in 1972. The roof, which weighs four million pounds and could contain two football fields side by side, was assembled on the ground and raised into position by hydraulic jacks, following which the rest of the building was completed. The suspended scoreboard is 16 feet tall and 24 feet wide at the bottom (20 at the top) and weighs 27,000 pounds.

The Marriott Center is used not only for basketball games, but also for devotionals, forums, firesides, dance performances, major concerts, community activities, and commencement exercises. It contains two press interview rooms, players' locker rooms, a "rest" room with 15 seven-foot beds, general purpose reception areas, a first-aid office, a weight-lifting facility, and a Cougar Club room.
