Completed in 1889 on the site of Buffalo's first Roman-Catholic church, St. Louis holds the title of "Mother Church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Buffalo".

Designed by Schikel and Ditmar in a traditional Latin-cross floor plan, the Gothic church features a 245ft tall octagonal Medina sandstone steeple which is crowned by a 72ft tall pierced spire; the tallest open-work non-reinforced spire ever built completely of stone in the United States.

The church is still an active house of worship and has seating for 2000 parishioners.
