  • The markers embedded in the intersection of Wacker and Michigan suggest a smaller location at the NW corner of this defined area. I believe that in 1803, the Chicago River meandered southward here, deflected by lake currents and surf. Later, Michigan Ave. was constructed immediately west of the shoreline and the South Shore rail bed was constructed just offshore. Streeterville, Grant Park and land in between them are artificial lands emplaced atop the pre-Columbian lake bed. In fact, all of Lincoln Park east of Canon Drive and the zoo are artificial lands.
