Streeterville is bordered on the North and East by Lake Michigan, on the West by Michigan Avenue and on the South by the Chicago River. Compared to the Gold Coast and River North, just to the west, Streeterville is much more quiet and residential. Also, Northwestern University's Medical and Law School are in the neighborhood, not to mention the beautiful Lake Shore Park, and the Museum of Contemporary Art.

  • Streeterville got its name from "Cap" Streeter, a Chicago resident in the early 1900's who, not long after the Chicago fire, ran his boat aground on a sandbar near North Michigan Avenue. Instead of digging out, Streeter decided to live on the boat, and eventually claimed the entire sandbar for himself, selling off pieces of it and creating a small neighborhood of shanties. The land was eventually taken over by wealthy businessmen who fought Streeter in court for rights to it until his death in the 1920's.
