While technically considered two different cities in Indiana, residents of both the Robertsdale community of Hammond and the city of Whiting consider themselves to be one community. They even share a post-office. Robertsdale is actually older than both Hammond and Whiting, having been a town since the 1850s.

The area on Hammond's far northeast corner adjacent to Wolf Lake and State Line is the Robertsdale community.
At Atchison Avenue, Robertsdale ends and the city of Whiting begins. Whiting is a charming, picturesque city with a quaint downtown area reminiscent of a small town.
This area of Robertsdale is known as the Watergardens and was built between 1926 and 1927.
The Whiting Robertsdale community was historically and remains predominantly of Eastern European descent, particularly Slovakian. These areas now have a growing Latino population.
