ghost town, EPA superfund, historic landmark

The town of New Idria began around 1857 to support quicksilver mining and processing operation. Benitoite, short-fiber asbestos, and serpentinite can also be found here. The New Idria Quicksilver Mining Company closed in 1972 and the town was gradually abandoned. The entire site is now considered a superfund site due to unchecked mercury contamination and is completely fenced off.
