The Fountain Diner is located in the Fountain Square Theatre Building at 1103 Shelby Street in what was once the luncheonette of the F.W. Woolworth store. After the Fountain Square Theatre closed in 1959, Woolworth’s occupied the ground floor of the building until it also closed in the late 1960’s. The space then housed a variety of other businesses including an office furniture store and a thrift shop until it was renovated in 1994 as part of the restoration of the Fountain Square Theatre Building. The diner was reopened using the original soda fountain, grills, counter and stools obtained from another local Woolworth’s store that closed in 1994. The pink, green and blue mosaic tile background is original to the space as well as the diamond motif that runs along the grill area.

Today the Fountain Diner menu serves hand pattied burgers with krinkle kut fries, jumbo tenderloins and hand dipped shakes and malts that have been voted “Best in Indy” by the Indianapolis Monthly magazine. The Breakfast menu is served anytime.

The Fountain Room, adjacent to the diner, was home to Goldsmith’s Drugstore when the building opened in 1928. That’s right, just in case you were wondering; former Indianapolis Mayor Stephen Goldsmith’s grandfather owned the drugstore. The Fountain Room now serves as the nonsmoking dining area for the diner and is decorated with B-movie posters from the 1950’s and 60’s along with pool tables, a vintage Rockola jukebox and arcade games.
