The Chicago Theatre opened in October 1921. It was originally the flagship of the Balaban and Katz group of theatres. Designed by Rapp and Rapp, its construction cost $4,000,000. The theatre presented premiere films and live entertainment into the 1950s. It was redecorated for the 1933 World's Fair and was then modernized in the 1950s when stage shows were discontinued. A slow down in business affected the theatre's viability during the 1970s and 1980s. From 1985 to 1986, the Chicago Theatre was closed for a renovation project. The Page Brothers Building stands north of the theatre. It has a neoclassical exterior and a French Baroque interior. The marquee, which was not part of the original design, was replaced in 1994 and retains the look of its predecessor.
With a current seating capacity of 3,600, the Chicago Theatre is now a leading performing arts venue.
The Chicago Theatre was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 6, 1979, and was listed as a Chicago Landmark on January 28, 1983.
