This waterfront property at the corner of Williams Road and Triangle Rd. in Richmond B.C. (15040 Williams) was purchased by the Vancouver Airport Fuel Facilities Corporation (VAFFC) with the intention of shipping Jet-A aviation fuel with Panamax tankers or ocean going barges up the south arm of the Fraser River. A new 15km pipeline is also planned that will transport the jet-A fuel through Richmond to the Vancouver International Airport at Sea Island and is intended to replace the 41km long pipeline that currently runs from the Burrard Inlet. The VAFFC also wants to build a new 80 million litre tank farm on the shores of the Fraser just north of their proposed fuel off-loading facility. This triangular property lies upstream from the George Massey tunnel and the Fraser River estuary that includes the Reifiel National Migratory Bird Sanctuary, Alaksen National Wildlife Area, plus the Sturgeon Bank and South Arm Marshes Provincial Wildlife Management Areas. Environmenal concerns and public interest are the focus of an extensive environmental review process which will be guided by the provincial government over the next two years. This process will include First Nations interests, public consultation, and widespread regulatory input. There are many who believe this project is not warranted under its terms of justification and that rail delivery of fuel from Alberta and Washington State along with maintaining the current TMJ pipeline from the Chevron refinery and Westridge marine terminal in Burrard Inlet makes more sense.
