The church, which serves as the Cathedral Church for the Episcopal Diocese of Indianapolis, was founded in 1837, and the present building was constructed in 1857. It is the oldest structure on the Circle and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A splendid example of 13th Century Gothic parochial architecture, it integrates stone and wood.

The Cathedral has three organs:

* The Chancel Organ. Hellmuth Wolff and Associates, Op. 32 (1990)
* Gallery Organ. Taylor and Boody Organ Builders, Op. 19 (1992)
* Frederick E. Weber Memorial Continuo Positive Organ. Brombaugh Organ Builders (1996)
