The Birmingham Repertory Theatre is one of the most popular theatres in the region, being home to the Birmingham Repertory Theatre Company, founded by Barry Jackson in 1913. The current building became home to the theatre company upon completion in 1971. Designed by Graham Winteringham and Keith Williams Architects, it was awarded by RIBA in 1972 for its design. It underwent a refurbishment in 1991 and "The Door" opened as a replacement for "The Studio" in 1998, offering a second auditorium with 190 seats in addition to the 900 in the main theatre.

The building is now out of use for the time being as The Door has been demolished to allow for the construction of the Library of Birmingham adjacent, to create a multi-use cultural facility whereby both elements will be linked. The library is set to open in 2013, with the theatre likely to reopen before this.
