The part of the Romanesque architecture of the Old Castle from the 13th century is considered as the oldest preserved building in the town. The community of miners built here a large three – nave church consecrated to Virgin Mary. There was a cemetery around church and in the second half of 13th century Romanesque Chapel of St. Michal was built. At the end of 15th century, the church was enlarged in the Gothic style and fortified with walls, bastions and towers. The object had been reconstructed in Renaissance style in the period of Turkish invasion (1546 – 1559). The renovated church gained new name – Old Castle – and from that time it was used for military purposes (to 19th century). In 1777, the entrance tower was rebuilt to its present Baroque appearance. The castle was used as a police station, an ice – stock, a town’s archive, a library and a gymnasium in 19th century. The Municipal Museum was established on July 7, 1900 and the Old Castle was set as a place of it. The Old Castle was declared as a National Monument in 1950.
