The first mining academy in the world, established in 1735 as a school for mining officers, emerged as academy by Maria Theresa in 1770. In 1808 it was enlarged with an institute of forestry. Later renamed as Academy of Mining and Forestry. It had an important role in the mining and forestry education on the territory of the ancient Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. After the First World War - in consequence of the territory loss of Hungary (declared by the peace treaty of Trianon) - the Academy had to move away. It has been re-established in Sopron (Hungary) where it is still functioning and its students still keeps the hundreds-of-years old traditions of the ancient Alma Mater, which was born from the traditions of local guilds, the West-European universities (brought by students) and - of course - the miners. Briefly these traditions depends on the love of the homeland, the love of the profession and the friendship.
