Mellifont was the first Cistercian abbey in Ireland, founded in 1142 by order of Saint Malachy, Archbishop of Armagh. Significant remains of the abbey include the octagonal lavabo (where the monks washed their hands before eating), the rectangular chapter house and some Romanesque arches.
