Bray Head Railway Line

Ireland / Wicklow / Bray /
panoramic view, birdwatching area, interesting place

Between Bray and Greystones, the Dublin Rosslare Railway snakes along the cliffs of Bray Head. It is one of the most scenic tracts of railway in Ireland if not even Western Europe. AS the train rushes between the seven tunnels, there are brief tantalising views across Killiney Bay to Howth and Lambay, as well as south towards Wicklow Head and the Arklow Bank.

The cliffs support a wide variety of breeding seabirds (Mar to July), such as Cormorant, Fulmars, Kittiwakes and three species of Auk. For those paying attention, the feral goats residing on Bray Head can also be seen.

Originally designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the line has suffered extensively due to erosion and has had to be relaid on several occasions. Remnants of the old lines are still visible in parts. The line was electrified and opened to DART traffic in 2000.
