Sputnik IV (aka Korabl-Sputnik 1) burned up in the atmosphere over Wisconsin the night of September 05, 1962. Although most of the satellite burned up on re-entry, a single fragmant is known to have landed in Manitowoc.

The 20 pound fragment was recovered from the middle of 8th street by 2 police officers and was sent to the Smithsonian institution for identification. The actual fragment was returned to the Russian government, but two replicas were made. One of these replicas is on display in the nearby Rahr-West Art Museum.

A brass ring and a plaque mark the actual crash site on 8th street.
