In the days when nuclear bombers stood alert nearby, this was the heavily-armed entry gate to the alert area. Although family members had access to nearly every part of the base, military personnel only - and then only those with alert-level clearance - were allowed past this point, with deadly force authorized to enforce this restriction.

  • I'm sure this was a high security place, but in 1968 after a drunken dinner at the Officer's Club, I went with my Dad( i was 11) & a Hustler pilot or two went to where the B-58's were on 24 hour alert to settle an argument about the bombs. I don't remember what the issue was, but I do remember being told we were looking at nuclear warheads & I really was'nt supposed to be there.
