Second World War 1939-1945, Cold War 1947-1991, RAF - Royal Air Force, business park

Greatworth Park is an industrial park. The site was formerly RAF Greatworth 962 Signals Unit Transmitters. The camp was originally built in 1938/9 operating through the war as transmitters for Bletchley Park. Staff were Billeted at nearby Helmdon.

After the war accommodation was built on the camp, from war surplus corrugated black iron nissen huts, and it housed 962 Signals Unit which was a transmitter station for Comcen at RAF Stanbridge. It was re-housed and re-equiped soon after 1954 to take its place in the RAF's fast expanding telecommunications networks, that was so very important during the `Cold War'. RAF Greatworth was eventually closed down and the site leased to USAF in 1988. In 1992 it was handed back to the M.O.D. and sold off for commercial use.

The original accommodation area comprised of 5 nissen hut `billets', an ablutions hut and a larger nissen hut for messes, naafi and recreational use. Many Royal Air Force service men and women, National Service and Regular, passed through RAF Greatworths gates during its time, most have fond memories of their stay here, some of these can be found at

  • One time RAF Greatworth. The Transmitter Hall and the accomodation buildings have been extended, but the ariel masts are all gone now. I served here in '62-'63 the winter had heavier than normal snow, for a short while we were `cut off', but we stayed on air 24/7!
  • "accommodation"
  • accommodation indeed, emms are expensive, so am being economical.
