13-story Brutalist office building completed in 1973 as the new headquarters for the New York City Police Department. Designed by Gruzen & Partners and built by Castagna & Sons, it replaced the headquarters previously located at 240 Centre Street approximately one mile North of 1 Police Plaza. The building has a sprawling base ranging from 2 to 4 floors, with a tower in the form of a cube rising above it, overhanging certain sections in cantilevers of concrete-clad girders. The facades are all clad in brown brick, punctured by a grid of square windows, 19 per floor on each facade, with open corners. A very tall, plain parapet caps the building. It was renovated in 1984 and again in 2011.

Located on the 8th floor of 1 Police Plaza is the Real Time Crime Center, an anti-crime computer network which is essentially a large search engine and data warehouse operated by detectives to assist officers in the field with their investigations. The Major Case Squad and the Technical Assistance Response Unit are also located at One Police Plaza.
