Dispite the town's inland location (245km from the western coast), it is still subject to tropical cyclones and severe flood threats during the monsoon season.
The gymnasuim biulding at the Katherine Secondary School is also used as a designated cyclone shelter for the public. Northern Territory Emergency Services.
