The F-101F was the two-seat trainer version of the McDonnell F-101 Voodoo, a supersonic military fighter flown by the USAF and the RCAF. Orignally designed by McDonnell Aircraft as a long-range bomber escort, the Voodoo was instead developed as a nuclear armed fighter bomber and a photo reconnaissance aircraft. Later models were extensively modified to serve as an all-weather interceptor aircraft, serving with the US Aerospace Defense Command (ADC), the US Air National Guard and the Royal Canadian Air Force. Phased out of active US service in 1982, the F-101 is considered to be a major evolutionary step towards the F-4 Phantom II, one of the most successful Western fighter designs.

Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park's F-101F served with the New York Air National Guard's 107th Tactical Interceptor Group from 1971 to 1982 based at Niagara Falls Air Force Base. While in service, the aircraft displayed the red, blue, and yellow striped tail of the "Rainbow Squadron", representing rainbows over Niagara Falls. This aircraft was photographed while making a flyover of the Naval Park during its last flight in 1982, the picture is now displayed inside the Museum building.
