The Montgomery Ward store was built in three phases starting in 1925 with a two story, 13,680 sq. ft., building facing Schaefer Road. By 1937 when the last phase was complete, the main store was expanded to three stories with 77,000 sq. ft.of retail space, plus a 12,160 sq. ft. mezzanine. Eventually the complex comprised 125,000 sq. ft., of space and occupied 4.85 acres at the southwest corner of Schaefer Road and Michigan Avenue and included a separate automotive service facility.

It remained in operation until the company began experiencing severe financial difficulties in the late 1990s and closed in 2001. After several attempts at renovating the structure failed to progress, it was demolished in 2010 to make way for a new development..

In August 2008, a plan to construct seniors' housing, retail and medical offices on the site was announced. www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080820/NEWS0...
