interesting place, UNESCO World Heritage Site, listed building / architectural heritage, beguinage, 17th century construction
The St. Alexius Beguinage in Dendermonde consists of 61 houses built around a central courtyard with a chapel. From 1288 to 1975 it was home to the Beguines, a religious sisterhood. A group of political dissidents called the Geuzen ("Beggars") set fire to the beguinage in 1579; most of the current houses date from after this incident.
