Ieper is a Dutch-speaking market town in western Flanders which is better known in English by its French name "Ypres". This is pronounced "ee-pruh", but British soldiers often called it "Wipers".
Ypres played an important part in the First World War. The Germans surrounded the Allied-held town on most sides, though they only held it very briefly. Fighting was heavy and the town was virtually flattened. Since then, Ypres has been rebuilt and become a place of peace, with many war cemeteries around it, memorials, museums and the Last Post Ceremony held daily at the Menin Gate.
