The first burials here are believed to have occurred in 1813 or 1814. The most famous gravesite is that of Lodwick Austin, who died in 1836 when the stagecoach he was driving slipped off the local bridge and into Clifton Gorge. This incident is regarded as the first traffic accident in Greene County.
