An ancient staging post for heavy haulage between Warminster and Westbury. Special teams of mules were stabled at the Bell Inn (which building dates back 250 years). These teams were used to assist the drays up the formidable hill towards Leyton House (now the Army Regional Selection Board for young officers) before allowing a careful descent into Westbury Town
