Double Hot Springs

USA / Nevada / Lovelock /

These springs are also known as the Applegate Twin Hot Springs. They are two small pools in the desert first discovered in 1849 by explorers looking for a new route to California, i.e. the Applegate Trail through Black Rock Desert, as a southern alternative to the Oregon Trail.
DANGER:
The water is beautiful and inviting in the hot dry desert but it is a death trap.
The springs are at 140 degrees Fahrenheit and can scald you to death in seconds. Many people have lost their lives falling in on the slippery sides, according to an old rusty sign.
However, enterprising souls have taken it upon themselves to cart in a soaking tub that more safely draws spring water at a more comfortable soaking temperature around 104 derees Fahenheit. Even the rangers enjoy soaking in this remote tub at the north end of the playa.
