Following an extensive, multimillion-dollar restoration spanning three decades, the Central Canal and Canal Walk were extended into White River State Park downtown. Today, the area is a virtual garden oasis with lush landscaping, fountains, walkways, jogging paths, and murals depicting scenes of life in Indiana.

During the warm weather months, visitors can rent pedal boats to cruise along the canal. Landmarks along the Canal Walk include the Medal of Honor Memorial, Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center, Indiana Project Memorial, and the USS "Indianapolis" National Memorial.
